The Lodges

THE OUTPOST

The Outpost is the most remote of the two properties, located on the farthest western edge of Haida Gwaii. No other property in the region is more remote. Or more resplendent. Surrounded by untouched wilderness, guests find tranquility in this private, luxury oasis. They also find extraordinarily prolific runs of salmon, halibut and other ocean catch.

The fishing

The West Coast Fishing Club’s two lodges are located at the crossroads of the migration routes for most maturing salmon returning to spawn in the rivers and streams of either the mainland coast, or Vancouver Island. Langara Island punctuates the Gulf of Alaska, where all species of salmon roam to maturity over their life cycles. It is the only point on the entire migration odyssey which literally millions of salmon must pass on their appointment with nature. No other location, on either coast, sees a fraction of the numbers of salmon that pass the lodges’ doors each season. Since the total run divides at Langara, any fishery south of the island will at best have access to half the run. No wonder catch levels are consistently high.

Langara Island is small enough to give anglers the luxury of short runs to the fishing grounds, and due to the fact that it is an island, there is always a leeward side and several protected bays for calm-water fishing when the weather kicks up.

On the water, guests have access to all types of salmon, halibut, and a variety of bottom fish including Lingcod and Snapper. Although the highly esteemed chinook (also known as spring or king salmon) is the big boy and the coho (also known as silver) is the aerial champ, there are also tenacious chum and feisty pink to target.

The experience

Each of The Club’s lodges has a unique flavour, which creates a range of experiences for their guests.

The Clubhouse tastefully blends 5-star luxury and service with a warm and welcoming fishing lodge design. Every well-appointed room features comfortable beds, plush down duvets and private en-suites – several with Jacuzzi tubs. Choose from a standard room, deluxe forest view room, deluxe ocean view room or an owner’s ocean view suite.

You’ll find two spacious lounges ideal spots to share a drink. And share stories of your day’s Haida Gwaii adventure. Pool tables and a large screen satellite TV add fun and entertainment to the mix. Other must-have amenities include a spa with steam room and a massage therapist, a fitness room, two hot tubs, a library, and a business centre complete with Internet and a quiet place to conduct private calls.

The Outpost may be in the wilderness, but it is the polar opposite of camping. Its lounge area is well-appointed with rich leather furnishings, a large fireplace, a billiard table and satellite access. Step out onto the deck and a soothing hot tub awaits you. There’s also an elegant dining room with a panoramic view that could temporarily cause you to forget your magnificent meal.

The facts

All packages include round-trip airfare from Vancouver International Airport on privately chartered aircraft. This is followed by a scenic trip by helicopter right to the doorstep of the lodge. Upon arrival you will enjoy a gourmet brunch, change into your fishing gear and be directed to your awaiting boat. After a short commute to the fishing grounds, you will drop your lines and you are off!
