Our Field Team is a small group of guides, clinicians, and competitive anglers whose world revolves around fishing. Not only are Field Team expert anglers, they are also experts at sharing their knowledge and experiences with others through social media, publications, online forums, personal websites and television.

Together, we work with our Field Team to advance the Islander Brand as well as their own respective careers for a mutually beneficial relationship.

Islander’s Field Team has been built over time through relationships, shared experiences, and mutual goals. While we do not accept open applications, we are always interested in hearing from other industry professionals to find out if there are opportunities for collaboration.

If you are a licensed fishing guide, you may be eligible for a discount on Islander equipment. Please email info@islander.com for more information.

In addition, if you’ve been interested in trying out an Islander reel, these destinations are equipped with Islander products, ready to fish for your targeted species.

If you represent a resort, lodge or guiding service, we’d be happy to have a conversation about the program and becoming affiliated. Please email info@islander.com and include “Islander Destinations” in the subject line.

Every Islander reel except MR2s and ARMR2s can be set up for left or right hand retrieved. The video below will take you through this easy process.

At minimum, we recommend using lukewarm fresh water to rinse off your reel after each day of use in salt water. In addition, regularly greasing your spindle and oiling your bearings will help prevent corrosion.

There’s a good chance your frame and spool have fused together. See the video below and be sure to maintain your reels on a regular basis to avoid this in the future.

It could be one of two options. Either your roll pin is not seated correctly into the spindle or the clutch is sitting on top of the pawl assembly.

Option 1

Remove the drag knob and separate the frame and spool.  Pop out the drawbar assembly. Under the head of the drawbar is a roll pin. Ensure that the roll pin slides into the slot that is at the top of the spindle—an unseated roll pin is likely the source of the problem. Reassemble the reel, taking care to ensure that the drawbar’s roll pin mates to the slot on the spindle.

Option 2

When assembling your reel, ensure that the pawl glides along the teeth of the clutch—the pawl should not be under it. This is rarely an issue with the LX/LA models as they have o-rings to hold the clutch in place but it does happen with the FR and on occasion with the other models.

There are two possibilities. The first is that you have loose handle bases and the second is that you have the wrong size handle bases.

Option 1

Chances are the handle base is loose. You will need to remove enough line so that the handle base screw is visible.  Use a 1/16” allen/hex key to tighten the base and a slot screwdriver to tighten the handle.

Option 2

If you have an older MR2, you may have the wrong size handle bases. See the photo below to determine if you have the right size.

If you separated the spool from the frame, the clutch may have suctioned to the back of the spool. Remove the clutch from the spool, slide it back town onto the spindle (cork up) and turn the clutch until the pawl engages. Make sure to press the clutch all the way down.

Older MR2s used a medium sized handle and base. All MR2 and MR2 handle kits are now sold with large bases and handles. See the attached photo to check if yours are the right size. If not, you will need to purchase and install large handle bases on your reel.

Because of the large number of extra spools purchased and the variety of colours involved, often spool and frame serial numbers are not aligned on fly reels.

In an effort to streamline our parts line up we reduced the depth of the top bearing in later FR reels. We now have a spacer that can make up the difference.
